She needs at least three gay men around her at all times, so this trip has really been draining her batteries. They head to the nearest homosexual hotspot so Doris can rejuvenate her energies. They share a bucket of KFC, Doris gushes about how perfect Malik is being, and Patrick asks if they can go to a gay bar or at least a Pinkberry with gay toppings. It’s unconfirmed which Wham! song they played for that, but we do learn that while Dom might be a lothario nowadays, he was no great shakes at pleasing the ladies. When they get back to the hotel, they take a dip in the pool, where Dom and Doris reminisce about how they used to have sex to pass the time. Doris briefly cheers up because, while her life is sad, at least she will never be Patrick. Patrick reminisces about how he used to spend his afternoons at the local donut shop alone with a box of glazed and a copy of Out hidden inside his Sports Illustrated. They have a terrific sad puppy moment.ĭom drives them to the site of his dad’s old restaurant, which is now a donut emporium. Doris almost bails, but Dom keeps her on course by reminiscing about how they used to make out while listening to Wham! My gut tells me “Careless Whisper,” but I secretly hope their teenage trysts were scored by “Club Tropicana.”īack in the car, Patrick finally makes himself useful and gives Doris a neck rub. There is only Patrick Murray.ĭom and Doris visit the funeral home to see the body. Patrick makes a quip about how pasty his legs are, because death is meaningless. She won’t have much reason to ever come back now that her father is gone, so she might as well make the most of it. As a kid, she always admired their pool and she wants to take a swim. She says that she’s not ready to deal with that yet, and besides, she’s always wanted to stay at the local hotel. But Doris powers through, providing us with a little bit of background about why she closes herself off and uses humor as a defense mechanism.īack in the car, Dom asks why they won’t be staying at Doris’ father’s house.
Patrick complains that her childhood seems worse than his, because he is medically incapable of talking about somebody other than himself. Patrick teleports into the backseat to request a tour of the Frito-Lay factory and remind people that he’s the most important character in the show.Īt a rest stop, Patrick asks Doris about her father, and she tells him a story about how they’d go on nightly drives to avoid her alcoholic mom. They talk for a bit about how she didn’t want Malik to come to the funeral because she doesn’t think she’s ready for that. On the drive, they reminisce about how her dad desperately wanted her to marry Dom, even after he came out. Dom should keep that in mind.ĭom and Doris take a road trip to Modesto for the funeral. Everyone laughs at first, thinking she’s spinning one of her classic Deadpan Doris yarns, but the truth sinks in fast. If you really want to see boobs, turn on literally any other show.ĭoris’ phone buzzes again, but it’s something slightly more depressing than a mid-morning dick pic: her father has died. Dom (Murray Bartlett) confiscates her phone before things get out of hand. While Patrick slowly pieces together the clinically depressing puzzle that was his night, Doris (Lauren Weedman) texts Malik (Bashir Salahuddin) non-stop, even shoving her phone under her shirt to send the world’s blurriest nude. Included among Patty’s offscreen Halloween festivities were 1) puking all over Eddie’s hobbit feet and 2) calling Ginger Roger a “Truvia whore.” At least the night ended before he could treat everyone to a drunken karaoke rendition of “You Oughta Know.” Now that’s a party killer.

As he pieces together his blurry memories, it’s less The Hangover and more Real World: Tampa Bay. Evidently the tequila-fueled freak show that was Patrick Murray (Jonathan Groff) did not end when the episode did. The episode opens with the gang eating breakfast at a local diner, recovering from the Kafkaesque nightmare that was last week’s Halloween party. It never devolved into grand speeches or operatic bouts of emotion, instead nestling yet another truth about the human condition into the subtle, low key universe that it has worked hard to build over the past season and a half. I once read that you can really gauge the quality of a show by how it handles death, and this episode really puts that theory to the test. “Looking for a Plot” was… well, it was quite something. When last we left our Three Musketeers, they were celebrating Halloween in February, not signing up for karaoke, and giving empathetic audience members anxiety rashes. Hello, guys and dolls! Welcome back to Looking, the only show where Russell Tovey cooking you breakfast naked is a bad thing.
